The Department of Natural Resources today announced a new
"friends group" is forming to help support Sanilac Petroglyphs State
Park and to protect the petroglyphs.
The Sanilac Petroglyphs are carvings
in sandstone made by aboriginal tribes that date back to approximately 400
to 1,000 years ago. The subjects of the carvings are various
anthropomorphic, animal, and abstract symbols that can be seen on the
sandstone. These are Michigan's
only known prehistoric petroglyphs. They were
discovered in 1881 after massive forest fires burned through the Lower Peninsula.
"The Sanilac Petroglyphs have
been rapidly fading over the last 20 years. Though the DNR and Department
of History, Arts and Libraries (HAL) have been trying their best, with
limited funding, to preserve this site, we welcome the help of private
individuals and organizations to keep this unique historical resource from
disappearing," said Park Supervisor George Lauinger.
"The strength of such an organization can help us obtain grants, do
fund raisers and generally spread the word that more effort is needed to
help save the 'rock.' We appeal to all individuals to consider joining the
friends group as these carvings have a great story to tell."
The petroglyphs provide a glimpse
into the lives of ancient, woodland people who once occupied Michigan's Thumb
area. The purpose of the friends group is to work with the DNR and HAL to
help protect the sandstone carvings.
The park is holding
two open houses this year on May 9 and June 28. Prior to each open house,
the park is hosting two work bee sessions on May 3 and June 21. At that
time, volunteers will help spruce up the park in preparation for the open
houses.
More information about the park and the friends group may be
obtained by calling George Lauinger, supervisor
of Sleeper State Park and the Sanilac Petroglyphs,
at 986-856-4411. The petroglyphs are located off Germania Roard near Ubly.
All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area
must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the
entrance. Cost is $24 for resident annual and $6 for resident daily. A
non-resident annual is $29 and a non-resident daily is $8.
